Yes. But wouldn't their salaries increase by 8M each year (I'm specifically referring to Cabrera & Gordon)?...that would make them cost prohibitive....Or is it the same salary for the next 5 years? For the others, depending on their performance (salary could go through the roof), I can hold onto them longer if I wait until their last arbitration year. Right?

It wouldn't increase it 8 m each year..If Gordon makes 5m and you sign him to an extension of 5 years it would be around 65m for 5 years..He would make around 13m a year..That would be cost effective if you want to keep him a long time.. If he keeps going to Arb he will get expensive quickly if he keeps having good years..Just using my numbers and where he is ranked.. 13m this year.. finishes the same rank next year he will get 21m next year and then you will have to franchise tag him as a free agent which would be another $10m making him 31m the following year..
Melky cabrera is not worth it since he will not get close to repeating what he did this year..
that is the way I read it..

Melky cabrera is not worth it since he will not get close to repeating what he did this year.. that is the way I read it.. Just responding to the Reds post...to make sure this gets clarified...which I thought I had correct but now question my understanding. As I understand it the rule applies as follows: Assuming a player is within the 3-6 years and is only on a single year contract the following can occur: For Gordon, he is due and additional $8M in 2012 according to the arbitration raises - bringing his salary to $9.4M. If I choose to extend him an additional 3 years at this time his salaries would be 2013: $17.4M; 2014: 25.4M; and 2015: 33.4M because of the $8M level he's at. Another example, L.Hochevar is due a $0.1M raise in 2012 bring his salary to $1.9M. If I choose to extend him 3 additional years it'll look like this: 2013: $2M; 2014: $2.1M; 2015: $2.2M. As I understand it I don't have a choice on how this is distributed or what the salary is. I'm not sure where the Reds came up with the $65M/5yr salary numbers but obviously it would be something worth considering...if I am interpreting the rule incorrectly. Obviously if I'm hoping for a 'good deal' in my scenario it would be that one of them breaks a leg at the beginning of the season, doesn't make it to the top 300 list and then I could extend them out 5 years with a minimal increment ($0.1M) each year...assuming that they'd be back to form during the 5 years following.

so say i am actually able to extend Cuddyer, I know i'm not, just an example, he makes $10.5 per year so if i give him a one year extension i'd add 4M because he ranks 94, if i choose to extend again it would be an 8M increase just like if you were to extend if it were a five year extension, you'd just be extending him more often is all

Try using the example we all ready laid out in these posts so we aren't looking at a 1 year extension and a 5 year extension.. If Gordon is making 5 mill this year and he wants to extend him for 5 years..he is ranked to get an 8 m raise.. He wants to extend him for 5 years. Gordon would then make: 2012- 2013- 2014- 2015- 2016-

12:5M 13:13M 14:21M 15:29M 16:36M this would be what the extension would look like for 5 years which is the max we allow on extensions

Don't you think that is a bit much of a raise every year? It really makes very little sense to sign most players to extensions..
Sounds like payroll will need to be $400m..

yeah i think adding 8M each year will not be worth it! i think do the 8M raise is fine but i think it should stay the same for each year
